Lack of Refrigerant: If there isn't enough refrigerant, it can force the unit to strain itself to maintain the same levels of cold air. Because A/C units don't consume refrigerant, low levels are often the result of a leak.
Blocked Condenser Coil: Every A/C unit has a condenser coil that works with the refrigerant to cool the home. If it is clogged with accumulated grime, dirt, and other debris, it can progressively make the unit have to work harder to overcome this obstruction. At best, you are spending more energy than needed. At worse, you run the risk of the unit malfunctioning entirely.
Blocked Drain Tube: Just as the condenser coil can be blocked, so can the drain tube. In this case, the drain tube collects and releases the accumulated water produced due to condensation. If it is blocked or clogged, it can cause a system back up, potentially freezing the evaporator coil completely.
Faulty Sensors or Electrical Controls: An air conditioning unit requires a proper flow of electricity to work effectively as well as its sensors to determine when to even turn on.
